Tech Transfer FAQ

Tech Transfer Office FAQ

Straight answers about using AI-generated commercialization strategies in a university tech transfer office — what Commercify does, what it doesn't, and how to evaluate it.

What does Commercify do for a tech transfer office?

Commercify generates the upstream commercialization analysis for a specific technology: a market assessment grounded in deep-tech market data, a recommended pathway (licensing, spinout, partnership, or hybrid), pricing and royalty guidance, target segments, a phased launch plan, risks, validation experiments, and relevant funding programs. It answers the question an IP management system can't — which disclosures are worth pursuing, and how.

How is Commercify different from Wellspring, Inteum, or other IP management systems?

IP management systems are systems of record: they track disclosures, patents, agreements, and royalties for decisions you have already made. Commercify is a strategy layer: it produces the market analysis and commercialization plan that informs those decisions. The two are complementary — most offices that use Commercify would keep their system of record.

Can Commercify help us decide between licensing and a spinout?

Yes — that decision is central to every generated strategy. The report recommends one pathway with a rationale grounded in the technology's development stage, market structure, and comparable commercialization patterns in that industry, and it explicitly describes the conditions under which an alternative pathway would become the better choice.

What data grounds the AI's analysis?

Strategies are grounded in Commercify's deep-tech market maps — curated data on market sizes, growth rates, key segments, notable players, pathway feasibility, and regulatory considerations across ten deep-tech industries — plus the specifics you provide about the technology. Where evidence is thin, the report says so explicitly rather than inventing precision.

How should we evaluate Commercify before committing to anything?

Run a real disclosure through the free GTM strategy generator. Pick a technology you know well, compare the output against your own read of the opportunity, and judge the quality directly. There is no subscription required and no sales call gating the output.

Is it safe to submit information about unpublished inventions?

Treat the generator like any external web service: describe the technology at the level of a published abstract or marketing summary, and leave out unpublished enabling details, claims language, or anything covered by confidentiality obligations. The description you submit is processed by our AI provider to produce the report. A strategy does not need trade secrets to be useful — stage, application, and market context are what drive the analysis.

Can Commercify screen our whole portfolio at once?

Not self-serve today — the free generator produces one strategy per technology. Portfolio-scale screening and a cross-portfolio view are what Commercify for Programs is being built for: we work directly with a small number of tech transfer offices to shape those capabilities against real portfolios.

What does Commercify cost for a tech transfer office?

The GTM strategy generator is free. Deeper engagements — portfolio screening, tailored commercialization playbooks, ongoing support — are scoped per office through the design partner program rather than sold off a rate card, because we are deliberately building those offerings with early partners.
